Cases have declined in recent months but health officials are still encouraging Louisiana oyster lovers to be aware of where their oysters were harvested.
If you purchased oysters since November 17, 2022, the Texas State Health Services recommends you check the packaging for the area from which they were harvested.
Texas woman Jeannette Leblanc was visiting Louisiana back in September when she contracted Vibrio vulnificus, a flesh-eating bacteria. After three months fighting the bacteria in a Baton Rouge hospital, Leblanc passed away mid October. Doctors say there are two possibilities regarding how she contracted the bacteria.
Louisiana oyster experts aren't sure where to point the finger of blame for a dramatic drop in oyster production. The BP Oil spill is certainly at the top of most experts list though.
