The folks at Evangeline Downs are getting set for a really big weekend of racing. They've got several stakes races set to run on Saturday where horsemen will compete for their share of purses valued at over 100-thousand dollars. For the horse player the better competition means more skillful wagering if you're hoping to walk out with more money than you walked in with.

There are usually two kinds of bettors at the track, the studious, knows the form, studies the trends kind of player and then you get the hunch bettor. Last night in race #6 a disc jockey playing a hunch on a horse named My Smooth Talker would have seen his net worth increase dramatically.

Those that played My Smooth Talker for the win returned $131.80 on a $2 wager. That means that My Smooth Talker left the gate at approximately 66-1 according to the odds makers. If you were fortunate enough to have My Smooth Talker in your trifecta with the #6 and the #3 horse you would have walked away with $3,729.00 on your two dollar wager.

It's true long shots don't hit the board like this all the time, hence the name but when they do you can always count on one lucky son of a gun holding a winning ticket because he bet on a name. Sometimes it's so much better to be lucky than good.
