Cajun Music Legend Belton Richard Dead at 77
The local music community is mourning the loss of legendary Cajun musician Belton Richard. He was 77.
The Rayne native and current resident of Cankton had recently been hospitalized due to pneumonia.
The accordion player and singer was known for his rich baritone voice. He rose to fame in the 1960s and was prominent on the local and regional scene for many years.
Richard's signature tune was actually not an original, but a French version of the 1958 Jimmy Clanton hit "Another Lonely Night". His version was entitled "Un Autre Soir Ennuyant".
Other hits of his include “You’re So Easy to Love,” “Mom & Dad’s Waltz,” “Jamais Une Autre Chance (Never Another Chance”), “Juste En Reve (Just a Dream)” and “Let Me Talk To Your Heart.”
Cajun musician Richard Lebouef shared some of his thoughts on the passing of Belton Richard.
He was one of my dearest friends and idols. Belton was as passionate a friend as he was a monster on stage! Always in command of his instrument and pleasing to his fans.
Funeral arrangements are pending. On behalf of the entire crew here at 97.3 The Dawg, we want to wish our deepest sympathies and condolences to the entire Richard family. And thank you Belton for your contributions to our heritage.
