At a press conference held Wednesday night, Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory announced the return of positive cases of Covid-19 for our area.

He says that there are now two positive cases of Covid-19 from our area.

These two people are currently quarantined, but they are not patients at Lafayette hospitals.

On Saturday, Dr. Tina Stefanki, Regional Department of Health Director, said that it would only be a matter of time before there would be positive cases in our area.

The death toll in the state of Louisiana stands at seven.

Governor John Bed Edwards announced at a briefing today that the number of cases of Coronavirus will surge as more testing is now available across the state of Louisiana.

Also at this press conference today, the Governor said that the possibility does exist that he could announce a shelter in place order for some areas of the state as the number of positive cases continue to rise.

Six of the seven deaths so far have been from people in New Orleans, and the other death was a Jefferson Parish resident.

Hundreds of residents went through a screening process at the Cajundome today, and Guillory also says that over 90 tests were given for Covid-19. In addition, the Cajundome site will be open again tomorrow, and you do not need to pay for Covid testing if it is deemed you need the test. You are still asked to bring your insurance card if you have insurance.

If you think you have symptoms of Covid-19, please call 311 for a screening and information about what to do if they do think you should be tested.

The screening is for people who have actual symptoms of Covid-19 and/or underlying medical issues.

At the press briefing this evening. Dr. Tina Stefanski, regional director with the Louisiana Department of Health, says that they are only allowed to give limited information about the two positive cases.

The doctor says there are hundreds of testing pending, and we will be seeing more positive cases of the virus as time goes on.
