The good news, Danny the former hurricane, tropical storm, and depression has dissolved into a remnant low and is not expected to reform. The bad news, Tropical Storm Erika formed over the open Atlantic last night and is moving rapidly to the west northwest.

Erika was the former 98L that the National Hurricane Center had been monitoring for the past few days. The storm was upgraded to tropical storm status last night and as of this morning had maximum sustained winds of 45mph. Tropical storm warnings have been posted for the Leeward Islands this morning as the system is moving rapidly to the west northwest at 20mph.

The forecast track for Tropical Storm Erika suggests the storm will skirt the northern edge of the Leeward Islands and pass north of Puerto Rico. Erika is expected to intensify and gain strength to hurricane status as early as Saturday. If the forecast holds that would put Erika in the southeastern Bahamas at that time.

The forecast models indicate that the Erika will most likely take a northerly turn as the system approaches the East Coast of the United States. At this time forecasters seem fairly confident that this system will not affect the Gulf of Mexico or the Louisiana coastline.
