(KMDL-FM) If you're a fan of shopping at the "dollar stores," then I think I can safely make this assumption about you: you're not shocked by much. Shopping at dollar stores can create its own unique and hard-to-explain, shocking shopping experience.

I think for a lot of us who have grown accustomed to the congested aisles of many dollar stores, the fact that merchandise is often strewn everywhere has lost its shock value. Or the fact that there are often many aisles blocked by shipping boxes that have yet to be unloaded onto the store shelves. That's not a shock either.

Revealed: The Shocking Truth About Dollar Stores

What else is not shocking is the fact that often there is only one or two visible employees left to run the entire store. Those individuals work hard. So, I hope you're nice to them and remember, they're underpaid just like you are.

And we still haven't arrived at the "shocking" part of the story. I'm trying to break it to you gently, and so you'll have some perspective. If you don't have the perspective, then you just might get mad at Dollar Tree because it is the subject of this story.

I remember some twenty years ago, the lady who watched my kids while my wife and I were working would take the kids to Dollar Tree on Friday to pick out a "treat" if they had behaved well during the week. It was a wonderful gesture, it motivated the kids to do their chores, and with the prices at the Dollar Tree back in the day, it was an inexpensive "carrot" to put on the end of an even cheaper "stick" if you know what I mean.

Let's just say that if you haven't been into a Dollar Tree recently, then you're probably going to wonder how they get away with using the name "Dollar Tree," because, like a disappearing rain forest full of trees, there are now fewer and fewer items that cost a dollar in there.

Here's a timeline of Dollar Tree's economic adjustments:

In 2021, the store raised its base price from one dollar to one dollar and twenty-five cents. In 2023, it was reported that Dollar Tree was now selling merchandise, a lot of merchandise with a $5 price point. Then, in 2024, it was revealed that Dollar Tree was now selling $7 items.

In the summer of last year, 2025, Dollar Tree announced that prices on certain key items would be rising from $1.25 to $1.50. And perhaps the biggest threat to the dollar store shopping mentality was leveled at consumers during the last few months of 2025, when it was noted that Dollar Tree was now stocking $10 items

The corporate directors for Dollar Tree say this price strategy is actually bringing more consumers into its stores. The numbers do suggest that more and more high-income shoppers are spending time at Dollar Tree. Which begs the question, if Dollar Tree becomes "Walmart", then where will middle-income earners shop?

Perhaps that is the next great adventure in retail. Or maybe we'll just have to learn to be wiser shoppers.
