This past Saturday was supposed to be the richest day of racing at Evangeline Downs this year. The horses were here, the riders were ready, the track was deemed not suitable. It wasn't that the track at Evangeline Downs isn't one of the best in the country. The main course and the turf course were deluged by a heavy downpour right after post-time and that put an end to the day.

I have to admit I was very disappointed but I understood the safety of guest, riders, animals and the need to protect millions of dollars in investments should have been the priority. Kudos to Evangeline Downs management for making the right call. The good news is that you and I will get to enjoy the main track features that were set to run on Saturday.

There will be a re-entry opportunity and a re-draw for post position later today at Evangeline Downs for the $100-thousand dollar Evangeline Mile for 3-year-olds and up, the $70-thousand dollar Lafayette for Louisiana bred 3-year-olds, and the $70-thousand dollar Acadiana for 3 year-old fillies. These events were scheduled for this past Saturday on the main track but were postponed due to weather.

The other remaining stakes races, the $300-thousand dollar Evangeline Turf Sprint and the $100-thousand dollar Opelousas Stakes for fillies and mares will be rescheduled at a later date during the racing season.

Post time for Saturday's first race at the Opelousas track will be 5:40pm.
