They say experience is the best teacher and perhaps that old adage is why FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is looking to hire individuals in South Louisiana who were affected by last year's record-breaking hurricane season.

The federal agency has announced job postings on the USA Jobs website for those affected by last year's storms to join the team and assist the area in the recovery process. There are several jobs available for those who are seeking temporary employment.

Among the jobs listed include manufactured housing specialists. There are also many postings for those with commercial or residential construction skills. As you might imagine almost any vocation that could be linked to rebuilding and restoring the area is needed in the hardest-hit areas of the state, namely Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes.

The USA Jobs website has all the information and criteria needed for employment listed. Those job postings will remain active through at least May 23rd. FEMA says it is looking to hire locally for two reasons. One, so many local people are looking for opportunities, and two, hiring from the affected areas of the state will help FEMA diversify their workforce on the ground.

Most of the jobs are specified to be for 120 days although it is possible and in many cases likely, that the jobs will be extended in 120 increments until the recovery process is completed or FEMA determines the positions are no longer needed to aid in that process.

According to the USA Jobs site, the conditions of employment include:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen to be considered for this position.
  • You must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/59.

FEMA is an equal opportunity employer and salaries are said to commiserate with local pay rates for similar jobs and experience.

Meanwhile, with summer and yet another hurricane season, fast approaching now is the time to do those things around the house that you may have been putting off.
