It's now been a couple of weeks since LSU's Joe Burrow won the coveted Heisman trophy, and gave a speech highlighting the local food pantry in his hometown of Athens, Ohio. Burrow stated in his Dec 14th speech 'Coming from southeast Ohio it’s a very impoverished area and the poverty rate is almost two times the national average. There’s so many people there that don’t have a lot and I’m up here for all those kids in Athens and Athens County that go home to not a lot of food on the table, hungry after school. You guys can be up here, too'. You can watch the entire speech in the video below.

Well, since then, almost half a million dollars has been donated to the Athens County Food Pantry, and a lot of that is from right here in Louisiana. $499,100 of a $500,000 goal has been raised by Athens High School and Ohio University graduate Will Drabold, with more coming in every day. The food pantry serves 5,000 families in the county each year and almost 9,000 meals every month. Burrow's call to action has sparked several other fund raising efforts for the organization, and the average donation has been about $33. Well done, Mr Burrow, well done.

LSU will play Clemson in the College National Championship game on January 13th in New Orleans.
