Sure we have beaches in Louisiana but our beaches don't seem to carry the same wow factor as some of the sandy shores you might find east of The Bayou State. The main reason we don't have the pristine white sands of Destin, Ft. Walton, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach is our economic lifeline, the Mississippi River.

Old Man River deposits a lot of silt, sand, sediment, and debris along Louisiana's coast and thanks to the currents in the Gulf of Mexico that not-so-white sand gets spread from Grand Isle to Cameron Parish. No, I am not besmirching the Louisiana coastline, I am simply stating what you can see with your own eyes.

But about those beaches to the east. Many of us will be making at least one more weekend getaway to the Redneck Riviera before school starts. Since gas is expensive and it takes a lot of time to get through the tunnel in Mobile Alabama unless you know the secret. You're going to want to maximize your beach time by knowing what to expect when you arrive.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office out of Mobile has launched an interactive Beach Forecast Webpage. It's got some really helpful features and it's so easy to use even an old FOGI (Friend of Grand Isle) and figure it out.

The page lets you zoom in on your precise location anywhere from the beaches of Baldwin County Alabama to Okaloosa County Florida and beyond. On the page, you'll find important rip current information, a UV Index Forecast and an explanation of how to use that to keep from getting a nasty burn.

And you'll even be provided with an up-to-the-minute forecast and weather radar scan to let you know if and when Mother Nature is about to rain on your parade or blow your beach umbrella over the top of the nine-story condo because they even have a waterspout index on the page too.

It's all designed to make your beach experience a good one and to help keep your family safe. After all, you don't want the highlight of your trip to be the seven hours you were stuck in the gas line at Buc-ees.

But in case you do leave it to the beaver, you might want to consider these as some snacky snack options.
