Why the Government Is Allowing E15 Gas in 2026
LOUISIANA (KMDL-FM) - If you’ve been hearing more about E15 gas lately, you’re not alone. The federal government has once again stepped in to expand access to this fuel blend and it could impact everything from gas prices to what you put in your tank this Summer.
What Is E15 Gas?
According to caranddriver.com, beginning May 1, 2026, the federal government (EPA) has issued a temporary waiver allowing E15 to be sold nationwide.
E15 is a type of gasoline that contains 15% ethanol, which is typically made from corn. That’s slightly higher than the standard E10 fuel most drivers already use, which contains 10% ethanol.
Typically, E15 is bit cheaper at the pump, which is the EPA is allowing it due to the surge in gas prices.

Why E15 Gas Is Usually Restricted In Summer
During the hotter months, June through September, federal regulations normally limit the sale of E15 gasoline because it can evaporate more quickly in heat, and there's concern E15 may contribute to increased smog and air pollution during hotter months.
These seasonal restrictions are tied to environmental protections under the Clean Air Act.

It mostly comes down to gas prices and supply.
Officials say expanding E15 availability can increase fuel supply nationwide, help bring down gas prices, and give drivers more affordable options at the pump.
