It’s been two months since congressional leaders were the target of an attack at a Virginia ball park.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise continues to recover from a gunshot wound to the hip. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says it’s a miracle no one was more seriously injured.

“It is a miracle that he sent off, according to Trent Kelly, perhaps 80 rounds, the gunman, 80 rounds from a high caliber rifle, and the only person that died was him. That is amazing,” Graves said.

The Jefferson Parish congressman has undergone numerous surgeries since the shooting. Graves says his recovery has been complicated because he has both skeletal injuries in the hip and leg, as well as soft tissue and organ damage in the abdomen. But he’s optimistic Scalise will be back at work when Congress reconvenes in September.

“He’s coming back next month. So we’ll see how that goes. He may be fighting off doctors at the hospital to come,” Graves said, “Steve is a fighter. His attitude and spirits have remained very high.”

Despite the severity of his injuries and the high risk of infection, Scalise has made remarkable strides in his recovery. Graves says he’s been discharged from MedStar Washington hospital and moved into rehabilitation.

“Indicating his progress, he’s moved to the recovery hospital in Washington, which is certainly good news indicating that upward trajectory of recovery,” Graves said.
