This Saturday, January 6 2024 is the Feast of the Epiphany, the day in which the 3 Wise Men were able to visit Jesus as a baby. This day is also the traditional day to kick off the Mardi Gras season in Louisiana. A free king cake is something you might be able to get from Rouse's this weekend!

Who doesn't love king cake? Pretty much everyone you know loves king cake. But, one of the biggest things people talk about is which king cake they love the best.

That's another reason our Acadiana area is so wonderful. There are so many different kinds of king cake that you can find.

King Cake Is a Staple of Our Holiday

King cake, traditionally, is a dough cake, just like other cakes, in the shape of an oval with delicious icing and a baby inside. But, just like all of Louisiana, everyone seems to put their own take on it.

From a simple cake made of dough with colorful icing to a Mardi Gras cake that has things like boudin in it.

The colors of Mardi Gras are always represented on the cakes. Purple stands for justice, gold represents power, and green stands for our faith.

Is It Good or Bad to Get the Baby in Your Slice of Cake?

I was always told as a child that the plastic baby was in there to represent Jesus. But as Southern Living points out, other people say the tradition stems from a New Orleans tradition in which a bean or ring was put in the cake during colonial times in Louisiana. The bean or the ring was to symbolize the king's ball that was held.

All we know is that it's a wonderful tradition, and if you end up with that baby in your slice of cake you are the person that has to bring the next king cake to the gathering.

Getting the baby in your slice of king cake also means you'll be lucky and prosperous and who doesn't want that?
