Drivers across Lafayette found themselves witnessing a dramatic police pursuit during the busy Wednesday evening commute after a suspect allegedly refused to stop for officers.

Lafayette Police have identified the driver as David Weldon, 51, of Lafayette, who was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on charges of Aggravated Flight from an Officer and multiple felony drug charges.

The passenger, William Hall, 47, of Lafayette, was also arrested and booked on several outstanding drug-related warrants. Both men were taken into custody after the pursuit ended near West Congress Street and Guilbeau Road.

The chase unfolded just after rush hour, with multiple motorists reporting seeing law enforcement vehicles pursuing a vehicle at high speeds through some of Lafayette's busiest streets.

According to the Lafayette Police Department, the pursuit ended safely with two people detained. No injuries were reported, and no innocent motorists were harmed.

Lafayette Police Say Driver Refused Traffic Stop

Police say officers initially attempted to conduct a traffic stop near downtown Lafayette.

Rather than pulling over, the driver allegedly fled, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.

The chase traveled through several major roadways, including:

  • Congress Street
  • Guilbeau Road
  • Johnston Street

The pursuit drew the attention of numerous drivers who witnessed multiple police units following the suspect through heavy evening traffic.

Pursuit Ends Near Congress And Guilbeau

According to Lafayette Police, the chase came to an end when the suspect vehicle pulled into a parking lot near the intersection of Congress Street and Guilbeau Road.

Officers detained two individuals at the scene.

Police say charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Despite the pursuit taking place during one of Lafayette's busiest traffic periods, police say no crashes involving innocent motorists occurred.

Authorities also confirmed there were no reported injuries.

Local resident Brad Boyd captured video of the pursuit as it moved along Johnston Street.

The footage, which has been shared on Facebook, shows multiple law enforcement vehicles racing through traffic as the chase continued.

The incident quickly gained attention online as many Lafayette residents reported seeing the pursuit from different parts of the city.
