Lafayette Officer Placed On Leave After Viral Arrest Video Sparks Outrage
A Lafayette police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave as the department investigates a controversial encounter captured on video and widely shared across social media.
The Sept. 12 video appears to show an officer approaching a young man before forcefully taking him to the ground. The young man has been reported to be 16 years old, although Lafayette Police have not publicly identified him or confirmed his age.
Multiple versions of the short video have circulated online. In the footage, a person can be heard apparently telling someone that they do not have to speak with the officer shortly before the physical encounter.
However, the clips circulating publicly do not provide a complete picture of what happened before the confrontation or what occurred after the videos ended.
That lack of context has fueled debate online.
Some commenters have criticized the young man's apparent interaction with the officer, while others argue that nothing heard in the publicly circulated footage justified the amount of force they believe was used.
The video itself does not establish whether the officer's actions complied with department policy or the law. That question is now part of the department's investigation.
Lafayette Police Chief Confirms Officer Is On Paid Leave
Lafayette Police Chief Paul Trouard confirmed to The Acadiana Advocate that the officer involved is the subject of an Internal Affairs investigation and has been placed on paid administrative leave while that process moves forward.
According to the Advocate's report, the young man's mother filed a formal complaint on Sept. 15. The department opened an inquiry the following day, and Trouard assigned the matter to Internal Affairs.
Trouard said the department also worked to verify the authenticity of the circulating footage before proceeding with the investigation.
Acadiana News First previously reported that Lafayette Police confirmed a complaint had been filed and turned over to the department's internal investigations division. Police said they would not comment on the specifics while the investigation remains active.
No final determination has been announced regarding whether the officer violated department policy.
NAACP Raises Broader Concerns About Use Of Force
The incident has also become part of a larger conversation about policing in Lafayette.
Lafayette NAACP President Ravis Martinez has called for a meeting with Trouard and Lafayette Mayor-President Monique Boulet after several videos involving Lafayette police officers circulated publicly in recent months.
Martinez told Acadiana News First that he wants to review the department's use-of-force data and learn what corrective measures city and police leadership has taken. He has characterized the incidents as potentially indicative of a broader pattern rather than unrelated encounters.
The Sept. 12 encounter is at least the third incident this year in which Lafayette officers have faced public accusations of excessive force following the release of video footage, according to Acadiana News First. The existence of multiple complaints does not by itself establish that officers violated policy in those cases.

Police Department Announces Additional Measures
According to The Acadiana Advocate, Lafayette Police have also announced several measures addressing use-of-force concerns, including expanded de-escalation retraining, weekly random supervisory audits of body-worn camera footage and revisions to department policy regarding an officer's responsibility to intervene when another officer crosses the line.
Trouard said de-escalation training itself is not new to the department and has been conducted for several years.
The Internal Affairs investigation into the Sept. 12 incident remains active. Trouard said the department will notify the young man's mother of the final disposition once the investigation is completed.
For now, the viral video has raised questions that the brief footage alone cannot answer. The Internal Affairs investigation will determine whether the officer's conduct complied with Lafayette Police Department policies and whether disciplinary action is warranted.
I deliberately kept “teen” out of the SEO headline as a confirmed fact because the sources I could independently verify say the person has been reported as 16, while LPD has not publicly confirmed his identity or age. That distinction keeps the story strong without overstating what police have established.
