The changes along Johnston Street continue as a familiar Lafayette building has now been leveled.

A Facebook post from Developing Lafayette on Friday (Jun. 2) showed a piece of heavy machinery in the midst of the remains of a torn-down building in the 4600 block of Johnston Street.

This is the latest structure to come down after, just a few weeks ago, another familiar Johnston St. structure was torn down in front of the Grand 16 theater.

Depending on how long you've been alive, you may remember the property housing a few different things—most recently being Moss Motors Used Cars. According to recent records, the property was sold to Racetrac but nothing new has developed at that corner of Johnston Street and Lana Drive.

This most recent snapshot from Google was from February 2023 and there is a visible sign advertising the 2.85-acre property as available for purchase or lease for retail or restaurant use.

There were rumors of a gas station being planned for the property, but for whatever unconfirmed reasons those plans never came to fruition. Two houses, directly behind the Johnston St. building on Lana Drive, are also allegedly part of the property.

The property is definitely attractive in terms of location, as it sits along a busy Johnston Street right next to the massive parking lot that serves The District, Lafayette Bingo Hall, and an event center. It's also across from a Johnston St. Legend's location on the other side of Lana Drive, which led to plenty of jokes in the comment section of the Developing Lafayette Facebook post.

Others were just happy to see the continued cleanup of Johnston Street and other Lafayette eyesores.

As far as the future of this property goes, your guess is as good as mine, so drop a comment in the Developing Lafayette Facebook post below, and let's stay tuned for what happens next.
