Officials with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office have announced that they have made an arrest after a fire in the Scott/Ossun area on Monday night.

According to LPSO Spokeswoman Valeria Ponseti, 23-year-old Kalayshia Lagrange was arrested. Ponseti says that 19-year-old Malaysia Conley was not able to get out of the burning house after the fire had been set at some point around 8 o'clock that morning.

Two younger children were already at school when the fire happened, so they were spared having to live through that immediate incident. One young man and an older woman who were in the home at the time the blaze started were able to safely make it out of the home.

Ponseti says Kalayshia Lagrange was arrested on the following charge:

  • One of Count of Second Degree Murder
  • Two Counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder

Multiple fire departments ended up responding to the house fire, and the home was a total loss. Investigators then went to the scene to work to determine what happened and how the fire was started.

Lagrange was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
