Kellie Pickler Opens Up About Being a ‘Cancer Buddy,’ Shaving Her Head on ‘Ellen’
"It's just hair," Kellie Pickler told Ellen DeGeneres on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' Friday morning (Sept. 14), where she showed off her new hairdo on national television. The sweet and southern singer has been getting loads of attention for shaving her head in support of her best friend's cancer diagnosis, so she stopped by 'Ellen' to answer a few more questions about her loyal act of bravery.
Even though she's a successful country star, life hasn't always been easy for Pickler. Raised by her grandparents, the 'Tough' hitmaker was sort of 'adopted' by her best friend Summer Holt Miller and her mother, Caroline. Unfortunately, Summer was diagnosed with breast cancer in June -- but Pickler wouldn't let her surrogate sister walk through the valley alone.
"We made a pact that we’d shave our heads together,” Pickler told DeGeneres. “I think it’s important to have a cancer buddy."
When Pickler and her 'sister' sat down to do the deed, they made sure to get footage of their pact in action. Ready to lead the charge, the country star went first and Miller jumped out of her chair and tried to run away! Of course, best friends always stick together. In the end, they both went bald.
Miller is currently going through chemotherapy after having a double mastectomy surgery earlier this month.
“It’s hard on your body, it’s hard on your mind. It’s not an easy thing to go through," Pickler said about her best friend. "But she’s a strong woman and she’s handled it with such grace.”
In the end, Pickler was quick to point out that it's just hair -- a shaved head isn't that big of a deal. Of course, all of us with full heads of hair will beg to differ. It's a huge deal and she should be commended.
“I will be honest with you, I was a little nervous and she was too," Pickler revealed. "[We thought], ‘I hope we don’t have some crazy birthmark or wart or mole or something . . . but we had fun."
In the end, the songstress looks just as beautiful without hair as she did with long blonde locks. What's that saying? True beauty comes from the inside, which is why the country star is such a looker.
