Lafayette & Lake Charles are National COVID Hot Spots
Lee Zurik is a reporter for Fox 8 News in New Orleans. Zurik has been tracking coronavirus cases in the state since March. Unfortunately, the news that Zurik is reporting does not bode well for two South Louisiana cities. The latest information, according to Zurik places Lafayette as the city with the sixth most COVID cases per capita in the country.
The news gets worse for Lake Charles. According to Zurik's data, the Lake Area was the number one hot spot for new COVID cases (per capita) last week.
Over the July 4th weekend Louisiana's Department of Health reported an additional 1,937 new cases of COVID-19 in the state. That brings the total number of confirmed cases in Louisiana to 65,226. Of those cases, 43,026 are reported to have recovered from the disease.
Meanwhile, state hospitals are reporting 926 patients are being treated for COVID-19 and the state recorded an additional 10 deaths over the weekend. The next report from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is expected to be released around Noon today.
