
Construction Worker Shoots Himself in Leg, Hand at Lafayette High
According to a press release from Lafayette High School, a construction worker employed by Lemoine Construction working on the new building accidentally shot himself in his hand and leg while in his vehicle.

In a statement sent to Lafayette High School parents, the school says that a man employed by Lemoine Construction, the company building the new school, shot himself in the hand and leg while in his vehicle this afternoon (10/17/24).
According to the statement, the man was parked in a secured area "near the construction site that affords no access to the school."
Without notifying Lafayette High, his employer, or the police, the injured man had a friend drive him to the hospital to receive treatment for his wounds.
Once at the hospital, staff immediately contacted law enforcement about the shooting.
Lafayette High states they were unaware of the incident until Lafayette police arrived at the construction site.
Lafayette High states that at no time were students in danger.
Lafayette police are currently conducting a full investigation into the incident.
Enacted in 1990, the Gun-Free School Zones Act is a federal law that prohibits unauthorized individuals from knowingly carrying firearms within 1,000 feet of a public, private, or parochial elementary or secondary school.
Exceptions exist for law enforcement officers, licensed individuals (with permits recognized by the state), and situations where firearms are unloaded and secured in vehicles.
