I don't suppose there is ever a bad time to go fishing. Especially when you consider going to work as the alternative. Fishing is an escape for many. It's also an opportunity to reconnect with nature and to live off the land even if it's only for a weekend.

Then there are bragging rights. Bragging and fishing have a long-standing connection with one another. Okay, lying and fishing have a long-standing connection with each other but I think you see my point.

Louisiana has a lot of great lakes, rivers, and bayous that are great places to catch fish. However, if you are in search of a record bass then subjective reasoning would bring you to one lake in particular.

That would be Caney Lake in north Louisiana. It's a small lake that is tucked away in Jackson Parish. While it may be little its fish are large. The state record for largemouth bass came out of the waters of Caney Lake. It's a whopping 15.97 pounds. That's right an almost 16-pound fish.

Caney Lake has also provided 6 of the top ten largest largemouths ever caught in the state. That's a whole lot of fish from a body of water that covers approximately 5,000 acres. There are some nice facilities there too. You might want to check out Jimmie Davis State Park. Yes, it is named after the former You Are My Sunshine Governor.

The lake has an average depth of 5 to 15 feet and there are a lot of nooks and crannies that could explode as hot spots for big bass depending on the time of day and the weather conditions.

Based on what I am understanding from the experts, the best time to catch a big lunker on Caney Lake is anytime you're supposed to be working, but out on the lake instead.
