Louisiana Parish ‘Bans’ Iconic School Supply – Is Yours Next?
Most parents in Louisiana are just getting done with paying the back-to-school bills. Whether your little ones attend elementary school in Alexandria or Monroe, middle school in Lafayette and Lake Charles, or high school in Leesville or Bogalusa, you know the cost of outfitting a kid for another year of education.
Now we're hearing that one Louisiana parish has implemented a "ban" on the one back-to-school item you probably spent the most money on. Now before you start foaming at the mouth about the high price of this and the high cost of that, I will tell you that the "ban" is experimental. And it's only going to last one week.
If you're wondering why a parish school system is taking part in a rather unique experiment it all boils down to student safety. And perhaps, the idea is worth considering. Here's what Madison Parish Schools posted on their Facebook account concerning this week at Madison High School.
Madison High School and middle schools in the parish have banned students from bringing and using backpacks at school for the week of October 28th through November 1st. The exercise is being touted as a precautionary measure following five gun-related incidents in less than a week.
Based on reports the incidents involving weapons occurred outside of school hours and away from school property. However, two of the incidents reportedly involved juveniles.
School officials see the move as a way to quell any violence in the community from spilling over into the schools. The backpack "ban" includes all high school and middle school students in Madison Parish.
