Louisiana Sets Record Returning Unclaimed Money to Residents

LOUISIANA - You might want to take a few minutes to check your name because Louisiana could be holding money that belongs to you.

Louisiana just announced a record-breaking year for returning unclaimed property, putting millions of dollars back into the hands of Louisiana residents. But even with that milestone, there's still more than $1 billion waiting to be claimed.

Whether it's an old paycheck, forgotten bank account, insurance payment, or utility deposit, there's a chance some of that money has your name on it.

Louisiana Returned A Record $70.9 Million This Year

According to Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, the state returned a record $70.9 million in unclaimed property during the 2026 fiscal year. That's the largest amount ever returned to residents in a single year according to WDSU.com.

Louisiana is still holding approximately $1.2 billion in unclaimed property that belongs to current and former residents. Officials estimate that one out of every six Louisianans has money waiting to be claimed.

What Counts As Unclaimed Property?

When people hear "unclaimed property," they often think of forgotten cash lying around somewhere. In reality, it can come from all kinds of places.

According to treasury.la.gov, some of the most common examples include:

Forgotten checking or savings accounts
Uncashed payroll checks
Utility security deposits
Insurance payouts
Stock dividends
Royalties
Refund checks
Safe deposit box contents in some cases

Basically, if a business or financial institution can't reach the rightful owner after a certain amount of time, the property is turned over to the Louisiana Treasury until it's claimed.

Some Louisiana Residents Are Getting Surprise Checks

Earlier this summer, the Louisiana Treasury mailed tens of thousands of automatic checks to qualifying residents without them having to file a claim. More recently, another round of claim forms was mailed to residents whose claims were too large to qualify for automatic payment. Those larger claims range from several thousand dollars to as much as $90,000.

The good news is checking only takes a few minutes.

The Louisiana Treasury maintains a free online database where anyone can search by name to see if they have unclaimed property waiting for them. There's no fee to search or file a claim if you find a match.

Your spouse
Parents
Grandparents
Deceased relatives
Former businesses you've owned
