Best Cheeseburger in Louisiana? Tasting Table Reveals Its Choice

(KMDL-FM) The food and lifestyle website Tasting Table has once again polled the people of our great nation with a food question. This time, the question was "What's the best cheeseburger in your state?" We can now reveal the results not only for Louisiana's "Best Cheeseburger," but if you'd like to see what people in neighboring states are eating, we've got that for you too.

The concept of a cheeseburger isn't that difficult to understand. You need some bread, you need some meat, you need some cheese, and if you want to make this list, you're going to need some imagination and an intimate knowledge of what makes a great cheeseburger.

What Factors Were Considered in Selecting Louisiana's Best Cheeseburger?

Obviously, the choice of meat in the middle is going to play a major part in whether the cheeseburger you're about to eat is going to be simply average or simply amazing. Personally, I don't think there is such a thing as a bad cheeseburger. There are only good cheeseburgers and memorable cheeseburgers. You might feel differently.

In addition to the choice of meat between the buns, the selection of cheese or cheese blends plays another huge part in the flavor profile of the sandwich. Many chefs prefer a nice sharp cheddar or at least a full-bodied cheese to complement the flavor of the beef. Others choose cheese for texture in addition to flavor.

Condiments on the cheeseburger do matter, but for most people those are personal choices, you know, mayo, mustard, ketchup, tomatoes, lettuce, and pickles. But of all of those additions, the pickles seem to be the one that is the make-or-break condiment for the status of the cheeseburger itself.

In reading descriptions of other cheeseburgers on the Tasting Table list, we found that pickles played the largest part in the flavor profile of most of the chosen burgers. Some people don't even care for pickles on their burgers; I think you're missing out because that vinegar smack to the taste buds really wakes up what's good in beef.

Louisiana's Best Cheeseburger is Served with Fries and Sometimes Champagne

So, no, it's not Judice Inn in Lafayette. That establishment has won many accolades for its hamburgers, but not this time. The editors at Tasting Table went with a New Orleans cheeseburger joint called Sylvain.

Sylvain is located on Chartres Street in New Orleans, and they are known for their unique pairings. This is a place where you can find a good champagne to go with your fries, if you desire. The black Angus beef patty is adorned with extra-sharp cheddar cheese and topped with dill pickles that have a flavor like no other.

The Sylvain Burger, according to the restaurant's menu, will set you back $20; it does come with fries. For an additional $4, they will add bacon, and if you desire a fried egg on top, that will cost you an extra $3.  The sandwich appears to be a good size but manageable, although it does look as if extra napkins might be a good idea too.
