LSU Baseball Opens Season Tonight Against Notre Dame
The last time we mentioned a sporting event between LSU and Notre Dame was in January. That was the 2018 Citrus Bowl football game. A game that was won by the Fighting Irish. Tonight, the sport is baseball and the Irish are in Baton Rouge to take on LSU at Alex Box Stadium.
It's opening weekend for college baseball. A sport that many fans in Louisiana get geared up for long before Mardi Gras. Our state has some of the finest college baseball programs in the nation and perhaps the crown jewel of those teams are the LSU Fighting Tigers.
Fans of the Tigers might need to consult their game program more than a few times tonight and throughout the year. The Tigers have added 17 fresh new faces to the lineup in the form of freshmen players or junior college transfers.
Those who can remember opening day from last year will certainly note that not one Tiger that started that game will be in the same position for tonight's game. Just to be clear, there are many of the same players, they just aren't going to be playing in the position they started in last year.
It will be kind of a reunion for LSU Coach Paul Mainieri. His last job before LSU was as the head man at Notre Dame so you know Coach will be even more incentivized to make sure the first game finishes in the "W" column for the Tigers.
LSU comes into the game ranked as the number 16 team in the nation. You can bet "The Box" will be rocking tonight when the evening's first pitch heads for the catcher's mitt at 7 PM. The Tigers and the Irish will play again on Saturday at 4 PM and will round out the three-game set with a brunch-like starting time of 11 AM.
