Luke Bryan had a surprise in store for fans on Friday (March 29): a brand-new single. Readers can press play above to hear "Knockin' Boots."

Opening with an echo-y groove and snaps, "Knockin' Boots" -- written by Hillary Lindsey, Gordie Sampson and Jon Nite, and produced by Jeff and Jody Stevens -- keeps its melody fairly simple throughout, adding in drums, bass and guitar sparingly. It's got a hint of 1950s doo-wop to it, and its lyrics maintain a basic pattern.

"Birds need bees / And ice needs whiskey / Boys like me need girls like you to kiss me / "Fishin' in the Dark" needs Nitty Gritty under that pale moon," Bryan sings in the chorus. "Sweet tea needs that sugar stirrin' / Small-town nights need both ends burnin' / Shades need drawin' / Hearts need fallin' / Boots need knockin' / Knockin' boots ... me and you."

Bryan surprise-released "Knockin' Boots" at midnight ET, after teasing on Thursday (March 28) that a new song might be on the way. The song comes from an as-yet-unannounced new album, the details of which are not yet known, though the song will be going for adds at country radio on April 8, and a press release reports that the album will be out by the end of the year. Bryan did recently tell ABC News Radio that he's been in the studio working on new music.

Bryan's most recent single, "What Makes You Country," peaked on the charts in early March. The country star last released a new album of the same name in late 2017.

Bryan will be spending his summer out on the road for his Sunset Repeat Tour. He's also been busy judging a new season of American Idol, the second on ABC.
