LUS Fiber Expanding Fiber Optic Services From Lafayette to St. Martin & Iberia Parish

Local officials from Iberia, Lafayette, and St. Martin Parishes joined together on Thursday to announce that the Economic Development Administration has awarded LUS Fiber with a $3.1 million grant to expand fiber optic services along the U.S. 90 corridor.

Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory, Iberia Parish President Larry Richard, St. Martin Parish President Chester Cedars, City of Scott Mayor Jan-Scott Richard, Acadiana Planning Commission CEO Monique Boulet, and other officials were in attendance. U.S. Congressman Clay Higgins and U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy joined via video as officials announced that this project will help support and focus on more than 600 businesses.

"It is a great day for LUS Fiber, Lafayette Parish, and Acadiana," Guillory said as he and other city and parish officials talked about how crucial this broadband access will be for those businesses, especially as COVID-19 has forced many businesses to work from home. It will also allow them to be more competitive and to communicate better.

Both Richard and Cedars mentioned how businesses are having to shift direction not only due to COVID-19, but also due to the downturn of the oil and gas industry.

The City of Scott and UL Lafayette were both represented at the press conference as LUS Fiber will be expanding to Lafayette's parish neighbor to its west and to the UL Lafayette Research Center in Iberia Parish.
