A man died on Saturday night in Opelousas after he crashed his car into the front of a building on Landry Street near Railroad Avenue.

Police Chief Martin McClendon tells KLFY that the crash happened just after 10 pm.

The driver has yet to be identified.

According to McClendon, an Opelousas police officer attempted to pull the driver over with activated lights after he ran two traffic lights near Park Avenue and Fern Street. The driver refused to comply and the officer continued to follow the vehicle until the driver smashed into the building.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, McClendon said.

The crash is under investigation and a post-mortem toxicology test is pending against the driver.
