LOUISIANA (KMDL-FM) - As Mardi Gras quickly approaches, king cakes are flying off of the shelves all over Louisiana. Obviously, along with king cake comes the king cake baby. The folks over at neutralgroundnews.com have become dedicated to rescuing orphaned king cake babies, and have just released a new t-shirt to help spread awareness that reads "Life Begins at Confection".

Tradition Of The King Cake Baby

Why do we hide little plastic king babies in our king cakes? There has to be a reason and something it represents, right? Indeed, the tradition of hiding king cake babies in king cakes has meaning behind it.

The tradition traces back to Epiphany, January 6, also known as "Three Kings Day", which marks the visit of the Wise Men to the baby Jesus.

In Europe, and especially in France and Spain, a cake was baked with a bean, coin, or figurine hidden inside. Whoever found it was crowned “king” or “queen” for the day. When French settlers came to Louisiana, the tradition evolved into what we now know as the king cake and eventually, the tiny plastic baby became the hidden prize.

The tradition is if you grab a piece of king cake with the baby in it, you are responsible for buying the next king cake. However, the folks over at neutralgroundnews.com say they are noticing an alarming trend of people around Louisiana abandoning king cake babies in record numbers.

From neutralgroundnews.com -

According to a five-year study, about 750,000 king cake babies are orphaned every year in the Greater New Orleans area. It also shows nine out of 10 people who get the baby in a king cake choose not to keep the child, often abandoning it to countertops, drawers, and even trash cans.

To bring awareness to this problem, neutralgroundnews.com have released a new Mardi Gras king cake t-shirt that reads "Life Begins at Confection".
