(KMDL-FM) Over the next six weeks, most of us will gather multiple times with friends and family for holiday celebrations. Often, alcohol is a part of those celebrations, and it's pretty easy to spot who is using that "medicine." But there is another libation that is gaining more public traction in Louisiana that could be coming to your house for the holidays, too. That substance is cannabis, or marijuana, or weed.

Currently, marijuana is available (legally) in Louisiana by prescription only. The prescription process is merely a facade. If you can fill out the paperwork and visit with a doctor, chances are you'll get approved for medical use.

But this narrative is not about whether you should or shouldn't or whether you could or couldn't use marijuana legally. It's here in the state, and it's only going to be playing a bigger part in our state's economy.

What is the Tax Benefit of Cannabis in Louisiana?

The sale of cannabis products could actually provide much-needed tax dollars to Louisiana's cash-strapped budget. That will happen when the legislature moves to legalize recreational pot. And that is not an "if" but a "when".

To me, there appear to be two different types of cannabis users. Some use it like a medication. They take it at the proper time to relieve certain symptoms.  I don't actually know anyone who uses pot that way; most of the folks I have spoken with use this medication recreationally.  Yes, under the guise of prescription medication.

How Can You Tell if Someone Is High?

So, who is getting high or going to be buzzing around your holiday table? There are signs you can look for. It might make you feel better to know your cousin isn't really stupid, he's just stoned.

And it might also help you to know who should and shouldn't be driving. The good thing about a cannabis buzz is that it does wear off after a few hours, and those who overimbibe don't usually get loud and rowdy; they just fall asleep.
