Superstitions Only People From Louisiana Believe

It won't come as surprise that here in South Louisiana, we have a truckload of unique beliefs and superstitions.

Cajun, Creole, French, Spanish, and Native America cultures have all combined for generations to create superstitions you truly won't find anywhere else in the world.

Onlyinyourstate.com has put together a list of 12 bizarre Louisiana superstitions, so let's take a look at some of the ones they listed as well as throw in a few others.

1. If an alligator crawls underneath your house, it means there could be a death in your family soon.

2. If you want to protect yourself from the Devil, hang a mirror outside of your door. The superstition says that the Devil is so vain, he'll become so infatuated with looking at himself he'll forget all about you.

3. If you dig a hole on Good Friday, you will find blood in it.

4. If you drop a dishtowel on the floor, you might have visitors soon.

5. If you cut your fingernails on Monday, you'll receive a present from someone before the week is over. We like this one!

6. To break up and stop a hurricane, make a cross with two knives nine times.

7. If you see a white butterfly it means good news is coming your way.

8. If you make a face in the mirror while lightning strikes, your face will stick and remain that way.

9. If a pregnant woman is upset about seeing a person with some type of physical or mental handicap, her child will be born with the same handicap. This Cajun superstition is the reason behind the Cajun French word "frapeed".

10. To keep unwanted, bad spirits away from your house, Louisiana legend says to read the Bible backwards.

11. If someone passes a mop over your foot, you'll never get married.

12. Never eat both ends of a loaf of French bread. Throw one end away or money won't come your way.

13. To ward off evil, drill a hole in a dime and wear it around your neck under your clothing. You can also spit three times for extra protection.

14. To protect against the Rougarou, lay 13 small objects such as pennies, beans, or broom straws by your doors.

15. The werewolf is not very smart and can't count higher than 12. When she comes to the 13th object, she gets confused and then has to start over.

16. If a hen crows there will be a death in the family. Obviously, it's the rooster who crows so this would be highly unusual.
