Few acts represent old-time country and folk music on a higher level than Old Crow Medicine Show (that's why band member Ketch Secor is among the handful of current performers interviewed for Ken Burns' upcoming docuseries Country Music). However, the group responsible for "Wagon Wheel" don't take themselves too seriously, so it shouldn't be too shocking that their Thursday night (June 13) set at Bonnaroo 2019 included a silly yet sincere cover of Lil Nas X's massive hit "Old Town Road."

Old Crow Medicine Show were performing as part of the Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo; 2019 was the second year the venerated country radio show hit the road to Manchester, Tenn., south of Nashville, for the annual music festival. OCMS have been Opry members since 2013.

After Secor suggested a cowboy song, bandmate Charlie Worsham vaguely introduced a selection by a "newer cowboy on the scene." The band then sparked an audience sing-a-long while adding its own spin to the infectious hit. For those not turned off by the song's short length or hip-hop elements, it became a homegrown fiddle tune that captures the original's carefree sense of fun.

"Old Town Road" recently kept its top spot on the all-genre charts for a 10th straight week, surpassing Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" as the year's longest reigning No. 1 hit and solidifying its status as this summer's ever-present jam. As for the haters, it'll be interesting to see how they react to a cover by an act with way more traditionalist credibility than Lil Nas X collaborators Billy Ray Cyrus and Keith Urban.
