Oops ! State Never Made Elmer’s Island An Official Refuge
You might recall the controversy from a few weeks back involving an idea that would create an airstrip on Elmer's Island. The idea was quashed by those who didn't want the designated wildlife refuge and sanctuary disturbed by such construction. Well because of that controversy a very important fact was uncovered.
The state had never officially made Elmer's Island what all the signs say it is.
According to a story on NOLA.com almost 80% of the islands "refuge" was never granted that status. Until yesterday when the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries made what we thought was official, official.
In addition to the now official status as a refuge. The Wildlife and Fisheries Commission also added an additional 800 acres claiming that land as a Wildlife Managment Area. The entire area will now be known as the Elmer's Island Wildlife Complex.
