Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Crash
Early this morning, Louisiana State Police began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on US Hwy 190 near Front Street in St. Landry Parish.
The crash claimed the life of 16-year-old John Richard of Port Barre.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 46-year-old Christopher Barker of Melville was traveling eastbound on US Hwy 190 in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado. At the same time, Richard was walking across the eastbound lanes of travel, near the center line.
Barker was unable to avoid Richard, and as a result, the Silverado struck Richard as he was walking in the roadway. There were no street lights in the area and Richard was wearing dark colored clothing.
Richard was transported to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Impairment on his part is unknown at this time but, routine toxicology samples were collected and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Barker was properly restrained and was not injured. He voluntarily submitted a breath sample which revealed 0.000g% of alcohol with no signs of impairment. This crash remains under investigation.
