Lafayette, La (KMDL) - With Louisiana’s warm weather returning, rats are becoming more active — searching for food, shelter, and mates. Unfortunately, that means they’re more likely to invade our homes, barns, and properties.

But when it comes to rodent control, many homeowners face a tough choice: how do you get rid of rats without putting your pets or other animals at risk?

One farmer may have found the perfect answer, and it’s safer, smarter, and surprisingly simple.

Pet Safe Cornbread Mix and Baking Soda Rat Poison

If you’re dealing with a rodent problem on your homestead or small farm, one frugal homesteader may have the perfect solution, and it costs less than a trip to the Dollar Store.

The YouTube channel Pine Meadows Hobby Farm: A Frugal Homestead shares tons of tips on homesteading, pest control, and farm life.

In a recent video, owner Jerald A. Hanson reveals what he says is the most effective, and pet-safe, method he’s ever used to poison rats on his property.

The Simple Ingredients:

4 teaspoons of Jiffy honey cornbread mix
4 teaspoons of baking soda
1 plastic container (Dollar Tree Tupperware-style)

Hanson explains how he cuts a hole in the side of the plastic container to create a DIY bait station.

Then, he mixes the cornbread and baking soda and places it inside. The sweet scent of the honey-flavored Jiffy mix attracts the rats, and the baking soda delivers the fatal blow, without harming other animals on the farm, or harming any of your pets at home.

This DIY rat poison hack is not only safe for pets but also incredibly cheap and easy to make, making it a must-try for anyone struggling with unwanted rodents.

According to Jerald A. Hanson of Pine Meadows Hobby Farm, it’s not the cornbread mix that kills the rats, it’s the baking soda.

When rats consume the mixture of Jiffy muffin mix and baking soda, the sweetness of the cornbread attracts them, but it’s the chemical reaction that does the real damage.

Once inside the rat’s stomach, the baking soda reacts with natural acids and creates gas.

Rats can’t burp or pass gas. As Hanson puts it, “Rats can’t burp or fart.”

The buildup of gas becomes fatal, making this a surprisingly effective, and pet-safe method for rodent control on farms, homesteads, or even around the house.
