Report: Clippers To Sign Kawhi Leonard, Trade For Paul George
Kawhi Leonard will sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, and Paul George will be traded from Oklahoma City to join him, according to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.
To acquire Leonard, the Clippers will trade their unprotected 2022, 2024 and 2026 picks, their unprotected 2021 and protected 2023 first-round picks via the Heat, and the rights to swap picks with the Clippers in 2023 and 2025 to the Thunder to procure George. L.A. point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and small forward Danilo Gallinari also go to the Thunder as part of the deal, according to Wojnarowski.
Per Woj, acquiring George was the key to signing NBA Finals MVP Leonard.
Leonard met with the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers and his team from last season, the Toronto Raptors.
Leonard's deal will be for 4 years, and worth $141 million.
Leonard's decision, along with the pairing of George, leaves a wave of ripple effects.
For starters, there's not a clear cut favorite to win the title next season.
The Lakers, who have LeBron and Anthony Davis, missed out on acquiring a number of potential quality free agents, as they abstained from signing players in hopes of signing Leonard. Davis even waived a $4 million trade kicker to clear up the cap space to get him, but he ultimately decided to sign with L.A.'s other NBA team.
