Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal spoke with NOLA.com and had this to say about Kano:

Kano was an instrumental part of the Police Department and served every day with a drive that we all could only hope to match... He stopped countless crimes and was able to catch more criminals than he missed. - Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal via NOLA

Chief Fandal goes on to extend condolences to not only SGT Morris but to the community of Kano's fans as a whole.

Kano's death came in the line of duty this week (per reports) not long after apprehending a burglary suspect.

According to WWL, Kano and his handler SGT Morris were sent out on a "suspicious activity" call at a bus yard, a location that had suffered repeated catalytic converter thefts.

When the officers arrived, a suspect fled into a nearby wooded area. SGT Morris released Kano into the woods and, within a short time, K-9 Kano had apprehended the suspect.

Shortly after that, Kano became lethargic, so he was rushed to an animal clinic.

WWL reports that, upon examination by veterinarians, it was discovered that Kano had cancer of the spleen, which was in an advanced stage. So advanced, the report says, that the exertion during the apprehension of the suspect proved to be too much for Kano's weakened system.
