Southern Beat LSU in Baseball for Just Fourth Time Ever

While most LSU sports fans' eyes were on the television watching the Women's Basketball team in Albany, New York in the Elite Eight, there was another sporting event happening that didn't end well either.

Last night at Alex Box Stadium, the No. 18 LSU Tigers baseball team was knocked off by the cross-town Southern Jaguars by a score of 12-7.

It was just the fourth time that the Jaguars have ever beaten the Tigers in baseball and the first time since 2019. It's also SU's first win at Alex Box since 2005.

Southern tallied 11 total hits in the game including a pair of home runs.

The hit parade started early as Jaguars centerfielder Tyeler Hawkins belted a three-run home run in the second inning.

Third basemen Ryan Ollison also drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning. First baseman Donny Sandifer also belted a two-run homer in that five-run fifth.

Southern reliever Antoine Harris (1-2) earned the win, limiting the Tigers to five runs (two earned) on four hits in 4.0 innings while walking three and striking out four.

LSU starting pitcher Kade Anderson (2-1) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed three runs on three hits in 2.0 innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

“Congratulations to (Southern coach) Chris (Crenshaw) and their program,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “They’ve rattled off several wins in a row, and they’re playing good baseball.

After a slow start, the Jaguars have now won eight of nine games overall and are 12-13 overall.

LSU drops their fourth straight and now sits at 20-10 overall.

Next up for LSU is a weekend SEC series that starts on Thursday against No. 6 Vanderbilt.

Meanwhile, Southern welcomes Arkansas Pine-Bluff to Lee-Hines Stadium for a three-game SWAC series beginning on Friday.
