There is quite a debate going on throughout the country. That debate could be making our children sick, literally. There are some who argue that the vaccination of children is creating more health problems than it is curing. Then there are others who say the statistics don't lie, vaccination of children against certain diseases is the only way to prevent epidemics.

A recent outbreak of measles that occurred among guests at California's Disneyland Theme Park has officials in Louisiana reminding parents that they believe vaccinations are in the best interest of the child and of the public.

"We have some of the best scientists and healthcare in the US. None of those people are interested in harming any children at all. Their main goal is to protect children."

Those are the words of Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Director Frank Welch. Dr. Welch understands why there is a concern among parents and why suddenly measles have become a topic of conversation.

"I think the reason people are talking about it is because of the measles outbreak that started in Disney Land recently. The majority of these people getting the measles are not vaccinated."

Dr. Welch made his comments to the Louisiana Radio Network and he reminds parents that their best source for reliable medical information is their child's pediatrician.

Recent comments by celebrities and United States Senator Rand Paul may have caused some parents to question the decision to vaccinate or not. In response to those comments Dr. Welch suggested that parents would most likely get more sound medical advice from medical professionals than from politicians or movie stars.
