Zip Codes play an important part in the "order of our lives". If you're not familiar the Zip Code or Zone Improvement Plan Code came to be in 1963. It was part of a plan to improve the speed of mail delivery.

The five digits in the Zip Code each have a purpose. The first number represents the general geographic area of the nation. The next two numbers represent a general geographic area of the country. The final two numbers identify specific post offices in the postal system.

Now you know about Zip Codes but there is another word we need to "define" before we continue to our Best Zip Codes in Louisiana. That word is "best". In this case, the creators of the study on Niche.com defined "best" by the following criteria. The rankings were created using location, quality of schools, low crime rate, housing availability, and value, plus job opportunities.

I think we'd all agree if where we lived scored high marks in all of those areas we'd be pretty happy with our circumstances. As we breakdown the "best" Zip Codes across the state we find that four of them are in the Lafayette area, there are seven in the Greater Baton Rouge area, there appear to be eleven in the Greater New Orleans area, and finally, there is one "best" Zip Code each in Lake Charles, Monroe, and Shreveport/Bossier City.
