Earlier this month Louisiana hunters found their way back into the fields as state wildlife officials officially opened Lousiana's dove season. That season opened for hunters on September 2nd. And you can still go out and get your limit in both the north and south zones of the state but you only have until September 17th in the south and the 24th in the north if you want to get in a hunt before the season takes a break.

According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife website after that break dove season will resume in the north zone on October 7th and the south zone on October 14th. I guess it's a good thing the dove season is about to take a hiatus for a few weeks, that gives us more time to focus on teal.

Louisiana Teal Season will Open on September 15, 2023.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife website says that Teal (Blue, Green, and Cinnamon) may be harvested from September 15th through September 30th. The daily bag limit for Louisiana Teal Season is 6. The possession limit is 18.

Now one of the trickier aspects of teal season is actually being able to determine which birds are teal and which birds are not. Taking another kind of duck out of season can and will result in some hefty fines and quite frankly, you should know better.

What's the One Thing You Can't Forget to Bring?

We are going to assume that you know what weaponry, ammunition, and other actual hunting hardware you need to bring. If you don't then maybe you should rethink this whole "outdoors thing". But one thing that might slip your mind as you're getting the blind prepped and decoys ready is insect repellant.

Sure, you could find and use a good bug spray. That would certainly help keep the biting bugs at bay in the blind but if you've not considered using a ThermaCell. These devices are small, they'll fit in your bag, and they work. Plus you can purchase refills which makes the appliance that much more economical.

Other Things to  Remember Before You Head for the Blind

You'll want to make sure your decoys are in good shape. Most outdoor and hunting supply stores have what you need in stock when it comes to parts and many offer discounts if you need to buy new ones. Based on what experience has taught us you don't need a ton of decoys to hunt teal but you might want a dozen or so.

The current weather scenario is not "perfect" for the start of teal season but it's at least okay. Many of the hunters we spoke with say they like to see cold front situated to the north of Louisiana during the season. This usually pushes the birds to the south or right into our target zone.

The current weather scenario has a stationary front situated right across South Louisiana. That frontal boundary will probably stay in place over the next 24 to 48 hours. So, there will be a threat of rain and storms across the region, especially during the afternoons but for the most part, the early morning hours should be rain-free and quiet.

Is Your Louisiana Hunting License Still Valid?

You certainly want to check on that status before you head down to the blind. The good news is your license can be obtained or renewed online via the Louisiana Department of Wildlife portal.

Here's to a successful season, it will go by pretty quickly so get out and make the most of it, remember your bag and possession limits, and be mindful of other hunters and where they are set up too.
