It was a big night for country music on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Tuesday night (March 22), as both Granger Smith and actor Tom Hiddleston — who plays Hank Williams in the new documentary I Saw the Light — appeared on the late night show.

While Smith performed two of his singles for an outdoor studio audience, Hiddleston showcased his yodeling skills for Kimmel.

Though he's from Britain, Hiddleston said he was well aware of Williams' legacy long before he was asked to star in the film about the musician's life. Watching American movies growing up, Hiddleston reveals Williams was always present.

"Every time a hero would walk into a diner and order a milkshake and burger Hank Williams would be playing on a jukebox," the actor explains.

Hiddleston met with Holly Williams, the daughter of Hank Williams Jr., while acting in the movie, and says that Williams' granddaughter approved of his role.

"Holly was really sweet, she wrote me an email. I think she's really proud of it and she feels like I did him proud," he reveals with a smile. "I took it quite seriously. I take the responsibility seriously. I knew as a British actor going in to play such a loved icon of American music I had to. I was very dedicated. I went down to Nashville and lived with a musician named Rodney Crowell. I can yodel now. There comes a time in a man's life when he's called upon to yodel."

After admitting he can yodel, Kimmel asked Hiddleston to show off his new skill. While explaining Williams' song "Long Gone Lonesome Blues," he sang and yodeled on the chorus of the song to Kimmel's approval. I Saw the Light will hit theaters nationwide on April 1.

On the same episode, Smith performed his recent No. 1 single "Backroad Song" — which aired during the show — and his brand new single "If the Boot Fits" outside of the Los Angeles studio for a packed crowd. Dressed in a camo hat, jeans and brown boots, Smith brought his energy to both songs.
