If I could hold my breath that long I'd do it every time I drove on the basin bridge across the Atchafalaya Basin on I-10. I'm not afraid of bridges, I am afraid of idiots. It's usually some idiot trying to go too fast or weave in and out of traffic that causes a tie up that causes a lot of people to sit four and five hours while the authorities clean up the mess.

Over the next several days the Basin Bridge will be slow for another reason. For simplicity sake we will call it construction but in reality it is inspection that is going on.  The inspections started yesterday and are scheduled to continue through September the 10th. Crews will be on site from 7am until 2pm on days when inspections are scheduled.

In order to facilitate the inspections and keep highway workers safe DOTD crews will be shutting down different portions of the roadway between Whiskey Bay and milepost 117. The shutdowns will be one lane only so traffic will continue to flow but you can certainly expect some back ups.

Wednesday and Thursday  motorist traveling in the westbound lanes will see the one lane shutdowns. There will be no inspection work scheduled for Friday September 5th but inspections will resume in the westbound lanes on Saturday.

Eastbound travelers will see inspection closures beginning on Sunday September 7th and those inspections will be scheduled  in eastbound lanes through the 9th. On September 10th , the final day of inspections, crews will be working in the westbound lanes.

Motorist are encouraged to choose alternate routes and be mindful of speed limits in the work areas. It is also a good idea to be cognizant of information that is presented on the electronic message boards that are posted along I-10 leading up to the basin bridge.
