A word that we use quite often here in Lafayette and other parts of the state has been made official by the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

When you're walking out of a bar in downtown Lafayette and especially in New Orleans, it's no thought to grab a "go-cup" so that you can walk down the street with your drink.

Go-cup: a plastic or paper cup used especially for taking a beverage off the premises of a bar, restaurant, etc.” is how it's defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary that was added in April.

More than 640 words were added to the dictionary this April. Along with "go-cup", "buzzy", "swole" and "screen time" were added.

From NOLA.com:

'The work of revising a dictionary is constant, and it mirrors the culture’s need to make sense of the world with words,' Merriam-Webster notes in a feature about the new words added to the official dictionary.

As more and more cities, especially those that cater to tourists, adopt the go-cup law, it makes sense that Merriam-Webster would finally add it to the dictionary. Now, the question is will the go-cup law gain more attention and traction now that the dictionary has added it?
