United Way of Acadiana Offering Free Tax Prep
Tax season is upon us. And even though the deadline to file your taxes in Louisiana has been extended due to the winter storm we had a couple of weeks ago, they're not going away. At all. But help is on the way if you live in Acadiana, and haven't filed yet.
Once again United Way of Acadiana will offer free tax preparation for citizens through the VITA program. VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and it offers free tax preparation utilizing volunteers that are certified and trained by the IRS.
The service will be offered at 11 different locations across Acadiana, and is available for families whose annual household income is $57,000 or less. United Way President and CEO Carlee Alm-Labar tells KLFY that even if you make over the $57,000, they can still help. "We also offer other programs. There is no income qualifications. Some of same things we hope to achieve through the VITA program. We have other programs if folks need help."
If you are going to take advantage of the free program, you need to bring your drivers licence, social security card, and W2s and other tax documents with you. Because of COVID-19, most locations are appointment only. A list of the locations is on the United Way website, and you can also call them at 337-232-HELP or 211 in Louisiana for further information. More tax help is also available at the MyFreeTaxes.com helpline at 1-855-698-9435.
