Once the nostalgia abated, FOX’s X-Files revival pretty quickly started to sour fans by its awkward mix of mythology and stand-alone episodes, as well a cliffhanger ending that immediately demanded resolution. Well, strap in for another long wait, as FOX won’t get around to an X-Files Season 11 until at least 2017.

FOX’s flurry of announcements over the 2016-17 schedule and pickups naturally brought about a few X-Files questions to network head Dana Walden, who at least acknowledged “conversations” with David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and creator Chris Carter. That said, nothing came together in time for this year’s development cycle, and might end up in 2017 at the earliest (via TVLine):

I believe everyone is on board to do another installment of the show … Hopefully, this time next year we will have more news.

Said return would hopefully resolve the finale’s maddening conclusion, which saw Mulder in desperate need of a cure to the rampaging alien virus, before the inexplicable sight of a UFO shined down on both Mulder and Scully in a crowded freeway.

Chris Carter has also previously spoken to maintaining another revival’s balance of standalone and mythology episodes, but what and when should we hope for new X-Files?
