Four friends from Lafayette went to New Orleans this past weekend to hang out and have a good time. What was by all accounts a fun time for the group ended in tragedy, with one injured, and one dead.

Early Sunday morning, New Orleans Police Department and SWAT were dispatched to a “shots fired” call in the Westin Hotel located in the 100 block of Iberville Street.

When Officers from the Eight District arrived, around 6:24 a.m., hotel staff directed them to the 17th floor where they located a 24-year-old Lafayette man who had been shot by his 20-year-old now deceased acquaintance.

According to a 23- year-old witness, who was one of 4 men staying in the room, he was awakened around 5 a.m. by the returning three friends who were out partying. The witness said he and his 25-year-old friend went to sleep, but were abruptly awakened when they heard the 24-year-old shooting victim telling his 20-year-old (now deceased) friend to “put the gun down”.

The witness said he observed the gunshot victim sitting on the edge of the bed while his (now) deceased friend was sitting on the opposite bed pointing a black pistol at the victim. The (now) deceased gunman appeared dazed, confused and under the influence of some unknown substance. This behavior continued for a while until the gunman fired one shot into the 24-year-old victim’s chest.
