Brad Paisley Pays Tribute to Chuck Berry With ‘Johnny B. Goode’ Cover [WATCH]

Brad Paisley paid tribute to Chuck Berry on Saturday night (March 18) — just a few hours after the rock ‘n’ roll icon’s death — during his set at Runaway Country, a music festival in Kissimmee, Fla. Paisley slipped a cover of the Berry classic “Johnny B. Goode” into his setlist during his Main Stage-closing performance.

Readers can press play above to watch a snippet of Paisley’s cover of “Johnny B. Goode.” Behind him, the stage’s video screens displayed a photo of Berry, along with the words “Chuck Berry, 1926-2017). During a guitar solo, Paisley even attempted Berry’s signature duck walk.

Originally released by Berry in 1958, “Johnny B. Goode” became a Top 10 hit on both the Billboard Hot R&B Sides chart (No. 2) and the Billboard Hot 100 (No. 8). The song has been included on a number of lists of the greatest songs of all time (Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock, for example) and was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. “Johnny B. Goode” has also been covered by a number of other artists, including Buck Owens, who took the song to the top of Billboard‘s Hot Country Sides chart in 1969.

Berry, born on Oct. 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Mo., died on Saturday afternoon. Ultimate Classic Rock reports that St. Charles (Mo.) County police responded to a medical emergency around 12:40PM on Saturday, where they found Berry unresponsive. Although they “immediately administered lifesaving techniques,” they could not revive the 90-year-old Berry; he was pronounced dead at 1:26PM.

Berry was a Grammy Awards Lifetime Achievement Award winner, a member of the Blues Hall of Fame and one of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His influence on rock music — and, really, music in general — can be summed up by a quip from the late John Lennon: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry.’”
