How do you know if you live in a low lying area? If you look at your driver's license and it says "Louisiana" then you do. I know it's an old joke but one that is basically true. In our state flooding is always a possibility. You never know when an afternoon thunderstorm is going to park on top your house and put 4 inches of rain in your backyard.

For those that are concerned with flooding and securing the proper flood insurance to protect their family and their property there is good news. The good news will take a little while to get here so don't get too happy just yet.

The passage of the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act in March should mean a decrease of about 7% in premiums for the average homeowner in Acadiana. The bad news is you might not see that decrease this year. To be more specific the decrease in premiums is spread out over the next 5 years according to the plan. Some homeowners might actually be paying more for flood insurance this year than they did last year.

Authorities suggest that homeowners go ahead and secure flood insurance now. That way they will be in the system when the new premiums take effect. Homeowners that have paid too much for flood insurance should receive a refund for the difference once all the paperwork has been completed.
