Today marks one week since John Russell Houser opened fire at The Grand 16 on Johnston Street in Lafayette. The week since has been one of the toughest in the history of the great city of Lafayette and the Acadiana area.

That's why tonight at Blackham Coliseum there will be a community-wide gathering of "Lafayette Strong: Unite. Honor. Heal." Doors will open and 6pm with the event beginning at 7pm.

The free program includes a mixture of music, arts and prayer. Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel refers to the event as a useful step in a necessary process.

Cydra Wingerter, assistant to the City-Parish President, says the community has been dealing with things in pockets.

“Now we want to come together as a bigger collective group. Invite as many people as possible to come and really get on that road to healing," says Wingerter.

According to Lafayette Consolidated Government, overflow parking will be available down St. Landry Street at the Our Lady of Lourdes property. Shuttle service will be provided back and forth from Lourdes to Blackham Coliseum until 30 minutes after the event ends.
